A little care changes a sad life

A TELEVISION program has turned around the life of a young Anhui woman whose face was severely disfigured by a childhood accident.

Xiao Lin, 23, has a new face, a new job and a new optimism. Xiao's fortune changed when Shanghai Education Television ran a news report about her and helped her contact Shanghai Time Plastic Surgery Hospital in April.

She received two free sessions of plastic surgery on April 27 and May 26 to treat a huge, ugly scar covering the right side of her face, her neck and part of her right shoulder. Her right ear, mostly lost in the accident, was rebuilt.

Residents, touched by Xiao's story on television, suggested to Shanghai Jianle Rest Home in Qingpu District that it give her a job and this month she started at the home as a cafeteria clerk.

To give her greater skills, the rest home has also appointed a cook to teach Xiao to make cake.

Officials from the hospital and some of the residents who helped her get the job visited Xiao at the home yesterday.

"I am so happy here that everyone is very kind to me," Xiao said. "The huge scar gave me severe hurt physically and psychologically. I was isolated at school because of my ugly appearance and had to quit my studies. After coming to Shanghai for a job, I suffered prejudice as well."

Liao Yuhua, the hospital's president, praised the people who helped Xiao.
